Mary Baker Eddy

Mary Baker Eddy is the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and author of its textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.


Throughout her youth and early adulthood, Mary Baker Eddy struggled with poor health, as well as financial and emotional hardship. She overcame these challenges to become one of the most prominent individuals of her day. Toward the end of her life, Human Life magazine described her as “the most famous, interesting and powerful woman in America, if not in the world, today.”

She continues to be regarded as one of history’s more remarkable figures. Today, her primary work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, continues to engage readers around the world.

    Significant Milestones:
    1866 Mary Baker Eddy discovered Christian Science.

    1875: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures was first published by Mrs. Eddy.

    1879 Mrs. Eddy established The First Church of Christ, Scientist. As the number of readers of Science and Health grew, she established a Church organization to communicate the ideas in Science and Health for humanity’s benefit.

    1908 Mrs. Eddy founded The Christian Science Monitor, a renowned international daily newspaper available in print and on the Internet.

    Recent Recognitions Include:

  • 1995: Mrs. Eddy was elected to the National Women’s Hall of Fame for leaving “an indelible mark on society, religion and journalism.”
  • 1998: Mrs. Eddy was named by Religion & Ethics Newsweekly one of the 25 “most significant religious figures for Americans in the 20th Century.”
  • 2002: The Congress of the United States recognized both Mrs. Eddy --- for her outstanding achievements and contributions --- and The Mary Baker Eddy Library for the Betterment of Humanity.
